Gas Detection Check List

How often should I bump test my instrument?
Gas monitors require a bump test before each day's use, typically performed at the start of every work shift. If a bump test is conducted and fails, the monitor must be calibrated before further use.
Bump tests should be performed more frequently if the device is exposed to physical shock, high levels of contaminants, or atmospheres containing substances that may desensitize the combustible gas sensor and compromise accuracy. These substances include:
- Organic silicones
- Silicates
- Lead-containing compounds
- Hydrogen sulphide at concentrations exceeding 200 ppm, or exposures over 50 ppm for more than one minute
When should I calibrate an instrument?
Calibrating a gas monitor ensures accurate performance by introducing calibration gas to verify sensor response. This is the most reliable method for maintaining precision during operation. Recalibration frequency directly affects monitoring accuracy, and each manufacturer outlines specific recommendations.
For example, MSA advises bump testing before each day's use. If the monitor fails a bump test, calibration must be performed before deploying the device. In industrial environments, it’s standard practice to calibrate at least once every 30 days, though some organizations may opt for intervals of up to 6 months depending on application, exposure conditions, and compliance needs.
How long do monitors take to bump test?
Many single gas and multigas monitors have advanced sensors which take 10-15 seconds to complete a bump test.
Do I need a calibration station to calibrate my instruments?
A calibration station is not necessary for calibration. You may utilize manual calibration accessories for calibrating your instruments in the field.
Calibration stations do facilitate the calibration process, and they also keep a record of each test, making it easier to add to your confined space permits.
Does Supplynow offer calibration?
For peace of mind we offer gas monitor calibrations for the Altair 4XR, Senko and Draeger monitors at our location in Markham. We provide a calibration certificate and this process is typically completed by the next business day.
